ARTS and CULTURE For as long as anybody can remember, Theatre-on-the-Fritz has been the arts and cultural center of our enlightened community. Its roots go back three hundred years to Fritz ledge, a granite outcropping on the upriver end of the island. It was a place where certain Tilbury-towners and passing native Americans would congregate and carry on by the light of the moon.
Theatre-on-the-Fritz is located today in a renovated church on the water's edge behind Waldo Cheevy's hardware store. Not much has happened there lately due to a problem paying the light bill. The theatre has been dark for some time and is expected to remain dark until Sod Ferment's potato crop is in, or a step-down transformer is hooked up* - whichever comes first. Sod said he'd pay the theatre's light bill just as soon as he gets his potato money if we promise to produce his play "Moonlight and Potato Wine". Sod is Development Chair and sixth vice-president of the theatre's five member board. *This is a reference to another story that will soon find its way into these pages. For the moment. Suffice it to say that creativity and imagination runs rampant on Tilbury Island, and our public works chief thinks he has found a way to collect stray electric currents from the CMPCo power lines. He's looking for a step-down transformer. (toot finny) |
