The
View From Depot Square

Hello
again from the banks of the beautiful Kennebec River in downtown Gardiner.
While we still have a considerable amount of snow on the ground we did
receive our first true indication of Spring, the return of the Thunder
Bay! (click here for larger view)
This
is a truly beautiful sight to sportsmen and downtown merchants alike,
for the former it indicates that the start of a new season of fishing
is close at hand, for the latter the arrival of the Thunder Bay to break
the ice indicates a milestone of sorts in our ever present worry of
downtown flooding.
Anyone
who was in Gardiner during the spring of 1987 knows how real the threat
of losing everything to the River can be. As wonderful as life alongside
such a majestic waterway can be we must be ever mindful of the awesome
power that She holds.
On
a brighter note, it appears as though the Waterfront expansion project
is charging full steam ahead and a wonderful model was unveiled at a
recent event in town.
The
author hopes that everyone will get a chance to see this mockup and
offer their opinions and feedback to the waterfront committee and City
Council members.
With
the first signs of spring come thought of yard and gardening so let's
not forget to stop by Harvey's Hardware for your full selection of lawn
tools and seeds in bulk as well as packets.

Here's
your chance to join the team!
If
you have an ear (and an eye) for what's going on in your town, tell
us about it. Some of the items we might print here include :
Public
events at schools, churches, the library and elsewhere in town; Recreational
events; local news about projects and events. Photographs of the River
and of Riverside events, yesterday or today Just
keep it related to the river and go light on the commercialism
(like Keith does above.)
These
are just suggestions. Use your imagination. If you have questions just
talk to us in an e-mail to: editor@kennebecrivercommunities.com
We'll
take it from there.
